Chaos prevailed on the District Collectorate premises here after a 33-year-old woman, M. Pandiammal, attempted to immolate herself on Monday. The woman poured kerosene and set herself on fire around 11.45 a.m. on the Collectorate campus. Onlookers, who immediately rushed to save her, doused the flames on her sari , with water.

Speaking to the media gathered there, Ms. Pandiammal said that she had been cheated by three persons, two of them government employees, of Rs.9 lakh. They had promised her a job at Government Rajaji Hospital in the city.

In her petition to the Collector, she stated that a complaint regarding this was given to Karruppayurani police station. “After this, they threatened me and my family, to finish me off. They even damaged my sister’s house following which we lodged another complaint. No action was taken,” Ms. Pandiammal alleged.

She further claimed in her petition that no action had been taken so far which led to her taking this extreme step. “I had sought protection for my life and that of my daughter who is away studying in Coimbatore. The Collector should intervene and help me get my money back,” she said.

A few women police personnel present at the spot said that she had sustained minor burn injuries and she was taken to the GRH in a 108 ambulance.
