Many parts of south Tamil Nadu experienced summer rain owing to low pressure in southwest Bay of Bengal on Wednesday.
Theni, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Virudhunagar districts experienced rain, which benefited areas that are closer to the Western Ghats. It was largely sunny in Ramanathapuram district though Rameswaram experienced light showers.
Madurai city received 6 mm rainfall on Tuesday. On Wednesday, dark clouds and light breeze hung over the city without resulting in any downpour, causing much disappointment. Other parts of the district and some areas along the Vaigai riverbed received adequate rain. Catchment areas near Mullaperiyar dam and Vaigai dam received rainfall, pushing Periyar dam’s inflow from three cusecs to 100 cusecs.
Many parts of Theni district, including Vaigai dam, Manjalar dam and Sothuparai dam, experienced showers. The total rainfall in the district was 107 mm. Rain lashed Kodaikanal hills, which recorded 31 mm.
A total of 11 mm of rainfall was received in Virudhunagar. Places like Pilavakkal and Srivilliputtur recorded over 20 mm rainfall.
Heavy winds and continuous heavy rain battered many parts of Thoothukudi district. A total of 200 mm rainfall was recorded in the district. The rain left eight houses damaged partially and one concrete house fully. Since the tracks at Thoothukudi Keelur station were submerged, Mysuru-Thoothukudi Express was stopped at Thoothukudi Melur station.
The district administration of Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli declared a holiday for schools and colleges. All waterfalls at Courtallam were gushing.
