Over 100 weavers, including 118 women, were arrested after they staged a demonstration at Sellur in the city on Monday demanding the State government to increase their wages with immediate effect.
The agitation was led by Marumalarchi Labour Front state secretary Mahaboob John at Sellur. They shouted slogans urging the authorities to increase their wages by at least 50 per cent and rescue the weavers from hardships. Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA N. Nanmaran, Janata Dal (secular) leader John Moses, Murugan of Centre of Indian Trade Unions and councillor Palaniammal participated.
All the arrested were released later in the evening, police said.
