Water release from today

Public Works Department would begin releasing water from Vaigai dam for Chithirai festival on Tuesday.

A total of 216 mcft of water would be released for three days for Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai river and also for drinking water requirements of Theni, Madurai and Sivaganga districts.

A PWD official said that water release would begin at 8 a.m. Initially, 1,500 cusecs of water would be released for a day.

The second day it would be reduced to 850 cusecs and further to 350 cusecs on the third day.

The release would be stopped at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The official said that given the storage in the Vaigai dam, it would suffice drinking water requirement of Madurai city till June first week.
