The district dropped to the third spot in the overall pass percentage in Plus Two exams in 2015-16 from the top position it held in the previous year.

The overall pass percentage has gone down from 96.1 to 95.73 per cent. Out of 24,007 students from 199 schools who had appeared for the exams, 22,981 passed. As usual the pass percentage was more among girls (97.65) than boys (93.38). “This was mainly because of many failures in 20 Government schools and five aided schools,” the Chief Educational Officer, A. Pughalenthi, said.

More number of failures were reported in Commerce, Accountancy, Economics, Maths and Tamil, he said. This was despite the Education Department having taken all steps for providing additional coaching for weak students. Interaction with the best teachers through local cable channels were also organised, he said.

A total of 93 schools had recorded centum results. Among them 23 are government schools, 28 aided and 39 matriculation schools.

Three students from the Commerce stream of The Sivaksi Lions Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sivakasi, stole the first two ranks in the district.

While V. Nivetha got first ran with 1189, her classmates, S. Samita Devi and C.J. Krishna, secured the second place with 1,186 marks. The third rank went to P. Naveen Prabhu of Sivakasi Hindu Nadar Victoria Higher Secondary School in Sivakasi with 1,184 marks.
