Thirty-one idols of Lord Vinayaka were taken out in a procession in the city before being immersed in the Vaigai on Saturday.

The idols, which were installed in pandals around the city during Vinayaka Chathurthi by various Hindu organisations were brought to East Masi street and taken on a procession from there. The idols, taken for immersion, were installed by Hindu Makkal Katchi, Thevar Desiya Peravai, Akila Bharatha Hindu Maha Sabha and Bharath Sena.

The idols were taken on a procession around the four masi streets on various cargo vehicles and tricycles with loudspeakers playing music. Volunteers from the organisations accompanied the procession and danced along the way.

Traffic was diverted from the four Masi streets, Old Chokkanathar Temple Street and Thaikkal Street. The procession reached the Vaigai by 6.30 p.m. and the idols were immersed.

More than 200 police personnel were stationed along the route of the procession and security was heightened in the area.

The city police have restricted the entry of heavy vehicles into East Masi Street on Sunday as well in view of idol procession.
