Villagers of Sivagnanapuram from Vilathikulam taluk thronged the Collectorate here on Monday seeking the permanent closure of a TASMAC-run IMFL liquor outlet. The villagers staged a dharna.

In a petition submitted to Collector M. Ravikumar, the villagers said that there was no safety for people, especially girl students as the TASMAC shop was located close to a government higher secondary school. Over five hundred families were living at the village. Empty liquor bottles often broken were scattered on a street near the shops and alcoholic indulged in brawls in public places. More importantly, safety of women was at stake. Many a time, students tended to consume liquor. Hence, the villagers appealed to the authorities to shut the TASMAC shop down in the interest of students and public.
