The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has comfortably won the battle of ballots here as its mayoral candidate Vijila Sathyanand crushed the nearest Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam contestant S. Amutha with the resounding margin of 22,483 votes.

While Ms. Vijila polled 73,918 votes, Ms. Amutha got 51,435 votes. Speaking to reporters after receiving her winner's certificate, Ms. Vijila said she would accord highest priority for making the corporation greener and cleaner.

“We'll ensure corruption-free administration at all levels of the corporation. The residents will get adequate supply of drinking water by introducing new drinking water schemes,” she promised.

The coveted Deputy Mayor post also goes to the AIADMK, as the ruling party has won 30 out of the 55 wards of the corporation.

Interestingly, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has won three wards and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam has opened its account in the corporation council by winning a ward.

The Congress, which had — councillors in the last council and was forced to contest on its own this time, and the Bharathiya Janata Party had to content with only one seat each. Former chairman of Thatchanallur Zone P. Subramanian has been elected to the council from ward 6 as DMK candidate while his younger brother P. Jeganathan alias Ganesan, who contested with AIADMK ticket, has won the neighbouring ward 7 with the largest margin of 2,090 votes.

The AIADMK has won six of the seven municipalities and bagged 17 of the 36 town panchayats in the district.

The AIADMK got 17 seventeen town panchayats while its arch rival, DMK Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, got six. Independents (8), Congress (2), MDMK, CPI and CPI (M) bagged one each.
