The Corporation has drawn up a master plan to clean up the Vaigai here.
As a first step, the civic body is roping in social activists, students, voluntary organisations and women self-help groups for the drive on Monday and Tuesday (January 20 and 21) to spread awareness on preventing pollution in the River Vaigai.
Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa on Sunday appealed to residents to participate in the operation in their respective areas.
“We have to stop polluting the river and throwing garbage along the Vaigai stretch. It is an environmental hazard to the city and the Corporation is launching a campaign to protect the river,” the Mayor said.
This special campaign is being taken up under the Corporation’s Azhagiya Madurai Maanagara Thittam (AMMA scheme).
Stating that the Corporation was keen on finding a permanent solution to the pollution problem of the river, he said that a meeting would be convened with officials of various departments and engineers. Opinions of social activists, workers and interested public will be taken into account.
A large contingent of workers and public will remove garbage along the riverside stretch from Vilangudi to Teppakulam bridge. The cleaning would be mainly carried out by sanitary workers appointed under the AMMA scheme, the Mayor said.
