In an effort to improve Madurai’s cityscape, the Corporation had come out with a ‘Mass Cleaning Programme’ aimed at litter-free, clean roads and streets. Under the mass cleaning programme, on every Saturday, a particular area within each zone under the Corporation limits would be chosen and garbage removal would be undertaken in an intensified manner.

This Saturday, cleaning of garbage was carried out along the Vaigai river bed at Ramarayar Mandapam Yanaikal Causeway, Obulapadithurai, Mela Anna Thoppu and Arappalayam. Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa and Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal visited the above spots and monitored the garbage removal process.

Addressing the media later, he said that the Chief Minister has given priority to the development of cities by concentrating on solving drinking water problems and improving sanitation.

The CM has also announced an award for the ‘Best Corporation’ and keeping that in mind, Madurai Corporation has initiated the mass cleaning programme of the Vaigai Bed to make it a litter-free zone.

Mr. Chellappa said that required number of sanitary workers would be roped in and all vehicles meant for solid waste management would be deployed for mass cleaning programme. When asked about the prevention of dumping garbage, he said that dumper bins would be kept on the streets near the river. Sanitary inspectors would be appointed to monitor dumping of garbage.

“Plaques carrying information as ‘Litter Free Zones’ would be erected across the river bed and fines would be imposed on offenders who violated the rules. Moreover, we have plans to lay new roads and beautify the river bed,” he said.
