In tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat campaign, Madurai Kamaraj University had been spruced up, said Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan at the Academic Council meeting here on Thursday.
“Solid waste management system is being implemented effectively, saplings have been planted and lawns laid on the campus. A sum of Rs. 3 crore was spent to give a facelift to all departments, centres, hostels and constituent colleges of the university, and to renovate toilets,” she said.
She claimed that the academic and environment-conscious efforts had won accolades from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team members during their visit. The university had been re-accredited with ‘A’ grade by the NAAC in the third cycle.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell had been made an integral and independent part of the university with its own building, she said.
The meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m., started only at 1 p.m. since the Vice-Chancellor was to arrive from Chennai.
Some members representing teachers’ association MUTA objected to the delay.
Raising the issue before the adjournment motions were taken up for discussion, MUTA president S. Vivekanandan said the delay in holding the meeting was against the statute and rules of the university. “The next senior person after Vice-Chancellor should have called for the meeting in time instead of keeping all the members waiting. A bad precedent has been set,” he said.
Dr. Mathivanan attributed the delay to flight schedules in disarray at Chennai airport. She said her 7.30 a.m. flight was re-scheduled.
Registrar N. Rajasekar, syndicate members, administrative staff and senior faculty members attended the meeting.
