A total of ₹2.49 lakh in the demonetised ₹500 currency notes was found dumped in an unused well in Thirumarainathar temple at Thiruvathavur near Melur near here on Saturday.

Police sources said that the temple authorities stumbled upon five bundles of cash, all in demonetised currency, when they were incidentally inspecting the unused well.

The cash was handed over to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) officials and the Income Tax Department was also alerted to check if any investigation on possible attempts of laundering was needed.

A senior police official said that a case would be registered by the jurisdictional Melur police as necessitated by the initial enquiries of IT Department.
