Members of Police Boys and Girls Club of Anna Nagar Circle, which work with underprivileged children from Karumbalai here, have reasons to cheer.
Fifteen student members of the club who wrote their SSLC exams from different city schools passed with flying colours with 11 students securing above 400 marks.
R. Anbukalyani, who secured 488 marks, said he had not yet decided on what to pursue further. “Though I am interested in science, history is my favourite subject,” he said, while M. Virumandi who had scored 486 marks expressed interest in pursuing science.
N. Pradeepa, who had scored 478 marks, stated that she had chosen to pursue biology and mathematics in Class XI. “My ambition is to become a doctor,” she said on Friday.
The club functions out of a premises in Karumbalai and was started in January with the aim of lending a helping hand to underprivileged children and making sure that they are kept away from illegal activities and juvenile delinquency.
“We conducted extra classes every evening for the students in all the subjects and made sure that they remained focussed,” said S. Vikki, the coordinator of the club. “Most of these children come from poor families and their parents work as dhobis, painters or construction workers,” he added.
Anna Nagar Assistant Commissioner of Police B. Sakthivel said that classes on personality development, confidence building and motivation had been conducted for the children at regular intervals.
“We had installed a power backup system on the club premises so that the children could study there without being disturbed by power cuts,” he said.
