May 10, 2010 02:36 pm | Updated 02:36 pm IST - DINDIGUL:

Kudaganar and Sandhanavarthini rivers would be linked under the river-linking project to benefit drought-affected areas such as Vedasandur and improve agriculture activities in such areas, said I. Periasamy, Revenue Minister.

After distributing free colour television sets and gas stoves at Padiyur near Vadamadurai near here on Saturday, he said that interlinking of rivers would certainly enhance groundwater level as well as irrigation activities in drought- prone areas of the district. It would also spur economic activities at these villages. Moreover, residents of Vedasandur would get to taste Cauvery water soon as the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board completed the combined drinking water scheme shortly, he added.

The government was giving top priority to the welfare of women. House and land pattas offered by the government were registered in the name of women only, he added.

The Minister disbursed free gas stoves worth Rs.4.33 lakh to 866 beneficiaries at Padiyar, 1,600 television sets worth Rs.32.97 lakh at Vellabommanpatti, 3,817 television sets costing Rs.78.97 lakh at Vadamadurai and marriage assistance to 13 persons and Old Age Pension to 26 persons. The total welfare assistances disbursed were worth Rs.1.18 crore.
