Two drown in canal near Othakadai

Two youths drowned in the 9th Branch Canal of Periyar Main Canal near Othakadai on Tuesday evening.

Their bodies were fished out on Wednesday.

The police identified the victims as M. Tirugnanamuthu (27) and M. Senthil Kumar (26) of K. Pudur. The duo had come with five other friends from Pudur to bathe in the irrigation canal around 3 p.m.

However, when they were about to leave at around 5.45 p.m., they found the duo missing.

Their bodies could be traced only after downing the shutters of the canal.

Woman relieved of gold chain

A 47-year-old woman, R. Rama Thilagam, was robbed of over four sovereigns of gold chain at Subramaniapuram on late Tuesday evening.

The police said that the woman, a resident of Meenakshikoil Street was returning home after shopping. While walking back towards home after getting down at the Andalpuram bus stand, two persons riding on a motorbike came dangerously closer to her.

Just as she panicked, the pillion rider yanked the gold chain around 7 p.m. and fled from the scene.

The Subramaniapuram police are investigating.
