Police arrested two persons including a person who had allegedly accepted stolen jewels and recovered the property intact in Madurai on Monday.
Following a complaint from Shenbagavalli lodged on July 24, who works in a medical laboratory in Anna Nagar that her gold chain was robbed by two motorcycle-borne youths, Inspector General and Police Commissioner Sanjay Mathur directed the Anna Nagar police to register a case.
At knife-point
According to the complainant, when she was in her labaratory, two persons came in a motorcycle and under the guise of taking blood samples, suddenly showed a knife and forcibly took away her gold chain weighing 13 sovereigns. Special teams led by ACP (crime) Muthusami were on the look out for the robbers.
Based on the inputs gathered, the police detained a suspect at Maatuthavani bus stand and discreet probe suggested he was allegedly involved in the Anna Nagar robbery case.
Investigations suggested that a gang was behind the operation.
The Anna Nagar police told reporters that a notorious robber identified as Rakkappan of Kotturpuram, Chennai, his accomplice Suresh of Sellur in Madurai and another person Maya alias Satish of Sivaganga district were known to each other.
They had committed several crimes including murder and robbery in many districts.
Criminal cases
At least 20 to 25 criminal cases were pending against Rakkappan.
Normally, the gang used to hand over the stolen goods to their “contact” man at Bodi, Theni district, identified as Srinivasan, who would dispose off or pledge the properties.
On receiving the money from Srinivasan, the gang would spend lavishly, investigations revealed.
The police arrested Suresh and Srinivasan while they were in the process of securing other accused figuring in the crime.
Mr. Sanjay Mathur commended the team and hoped the remaining accused would also be arrested soon.
