The district police caught red-handed two ruling party cadres while distributing money to woo voters in Sholavandan on Tuesday. They also seized Rs. 55,500 from them. The Superintendent of Police, Vijayendra Bidari, said that a special team of police nabbed Sundaresan and Ramachandran, both above 60 years of age, on Kallar Street in Sholavandan under Sholavandan (Reserved) Assembly constituency.
The police team also seized a cover containing the money.
The Samayanallur Deputy Superintendent of Police, A. Velmurugan, said that Sundaresan had reportedly confessed to have brought the money to bribe voters. Though there was a mention of Rs. 1,10,500 on the cover suggesting distribution of Rs. 250 each to 452 voters, the police could seized only Rs. 55,500. “It is not known whether the duo had already distributed money to some of the voters or not. It is under investigation,” he said. The duo, functionaries of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, was arrested and sent to remand.
Ironically, the incident happened on a day when the entire election machinery in Madurai district was taking pledge promising to follow ethical ways in electoral politics.
