Twenty shops, in addition to the existing 100 shops, would be constructed shortly at Dindigul Farmers' Market at NGGO colony, an outskirt of Dindigul, said Collector M. Vallalar. He was inspecting the ‘uzhavar sandhai' there on Sunday.
The Dindigul Agricultural Marketing Committee had already sent proposals to the government in this connection.
Besides, a massive renovation work would be undertaken immediately to give a complete facelift to the market. Concrete slabs would be laid on walkers' path inside the market. Open area between two row of shops on the eastern side would get transparent plastic sheets roofs. Electrical work would also be taken up in large scale.
Steps would be taken to operate buses up to farmers' market through alternate road as the prime road connecting Dindigul bus stand and market was closed for the last week for construction of an over-bridge across a railway gate near Nehruji Nagar, the Collector said.
Electronic weighing machines would be offered to all farmers who have shops in the market.
When a few farmers complained that manual weighing machines were not functioning properly, the Collector directed the agriculture officials to repair the equipment.
Assistant Agriculture Officer N.V. Nagendran, who accompanied the Collector, said that the market was receiving 22 tonnes of vegetables and fruits during week days and 24 tonnes on Sundays. On an average, 85 to 90 shops were functional.
