Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board has launched ‘Drinking Water Safety Week’ by organising awareness rallies in Sivanganga and Ramanathapuram districts.

School students, members of self-help groups and TWAD Board staff took out rallies in the two districts on Tuesday, stressing the importance of consuming safe drinking water and cautioning the people against water-borne diseases.

District Revenue Office (DRO) D. Ilango flagged off the rally in Sivaganga, in the presence of TWAD Board officials.

In Ramanathapuram, the rally was flagged off by DRO M. Akbar Ali. The students, who took part in the rallies, carried placards, highlighting consumption of safe drinking water. ‘Save rainwater’ and ‘Drink safe water for healthy life’, read the placards.

P.M. Mari, Executive Engineer (Underground Sewage System, Karaikudi), said as part of the ‘Drinking Water Safety Week’, all the panchayats in the two districts would be distributed water sample testing kits for testing the quality of drinking water.

TWAD Board officials would train schoolteachers in testing the quality of drinking water using the kits. The trained teachers would, in turn, train panchayat presidents and water pumping station operators, he noted.

Observation of the week was aimed at creating awareness of importance of drinking safe water. People could avert contracting many water-borne diseases by consuming safe drinking water, he added.
