Condemning the attack on a house surgeon at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) on Sunday night, the interns struck work and staged a demonstration on the TVMCH premises on Monday. After his father, who had been admitted to the hospital, breathed his last on Sunday night, G.Abhimanyu (24) of Kallaththi under Moolaikkaraipatti police station limits allegedly assaulted house surgeon Suresh Babu. Mr.Babu filed a complaint and the police arrested Abhimanyu. Condemning the incident, the house surgeons went on strike and held a demonstration demanding police protection to the doctors and the interns throughout the day.
The protestors also said surveillance cameras should be fitted in all wards to ensure the safety of the doctors, nurses, interns and patients.
By introducing proper ‘token system’, the number of attendants visiting the patients should be restricted to two, they said.
“Though stringent legal provisions are there to deter people from attacking the doctors or interns on duty, a case was registered under ordinary sections after this incident. Only after the interns registered their protest, the sections were altered,” said R.Ragul, vice-chairman of Interns’ Association.
