During a crackdown launched by transport authorities here on Friday on the directive of Collector M. Ravikumar, check reports were issued to 12 erring drivers of mini buses.

Based on complaints received by district administration regarding collection of excess fares from passengers, the authorities, led by Regional Transport Officer K. Anand, conducted checks in mini buses. The officials checked ticket fares after the passengers alighted from the mini buses at various locations, including old bus stand and new bus stand, Millerpuram, Thalamuthunagar and Third Mile here.

The crew of eight mini buses had collected over and above the stipulated maximum fare of Rs. 5 from the passengers.

Besides, four mini buses had air horns fitted in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. Audio songs were played at high decibel in some vehicles, the RTO said.

Around 50 mini buses were plying to various destinations from Thoothukudi, he said.
