Transgender activist Bharathi Kannamma has filed a private complaint in a Madurai court against actress and Congress national spokesperson Kushboo Sundar for allegedly making demeaning remarks against transgenders.

Private

complaint

In the complaint filed before Judicial Magistrate Court IV in Madurai, Ms. Kannamma had cited the recent comments made by Ms. Kushboo to a newspaper stating that transgender persons contesting elections should build up their profile first instead of aiming to directly become MP or MLA.

Ms. Kannamma had claimed that Ms. Kushboo’s remarks were targeted against her as she was the first transgender person to contest an election.

She had also alleged that Ms. Kushboo’s remarks had humiliated her and the entire transgender community.

Claiming that the remark amounts to offence under various sections of the IPC, including Section 499 that deals with defamation, Ms. Kannamma requested the court to summon and investigate Ms. Kushboo.

The court has posted the case to April 25.
