National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) has called for transfer of 17 cases of blasts reported in and around Madurai to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, A. Marx, president, said though several wings of the State police were involved in the investigation of these cases reported between 2011 and 2016 a majority of the accused did not have any link with the incidents. He claimed that the police themselves admitted that they were explosions of a minor nature, but harassed innocent Muslims, including women, in the name of investigation. In many cases, the first information reports filed by different agencies were contradictory in nature.
Mr. Marx said 22 persons had been charged with offences in the 17 cases and only 10 of them were arrested. Among the 10, nine were already out on bail. He alleged that by filing false cases the police were attempting to project Madurai as a powder keg and a hub of extremism.
Rajini, advocate, said by filing such cases the police were attempting to criminalise Muslims.
Mr. Marx wanted a judicial enquiry into the charges of dereliction of duty and corruption made by former Madurai Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan against a head constable.
