Inspection teams of School Education Department have noticed that toilets in ‘elite’ private matriculation schools in the city are unhygienic, posing a threat to the health of students.
The toilets are not maintained properly and ‘stinking’ complaints are received, seeking the intervention of officials.
WarningA warning has been issued to some schools to clean their toilets daily.
J. Angelo Irudayasamy, Chief Educational Officer, told The Hindu on Wednesday that excuses for poor upkeep of toilets were unacceptable.
“They are elite schools and it was shocking to see their toilets in unhygienic condition. They have a good number of toilets but there is no daily maintenance,” he said.
“When these schools come for renewal of recognition, the department will take appropriate action,” he warned and pointed out that girl students suffered the most due to poor hygiene in toilets.
For government schools, construction of additional toilets had been taken up with government support and participation of companies.
Neyveli Lignite Corporation has come forward to build 50 toilets for government schools in the district while the Airports Authority of India will construct 25 toilets in the first phase.
