The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation has been asked to operate additional bus services during peak hour traffic, especially coinciding with the timings of schools and colleges, to prevent overloading and footboard travelling in buses.
At a meeting organised at the District Police Office in Madurai on Thursday, K. Vannia Perumal, Inspector General of Police and Chief Vigilance Officer, TNSTC, Madurai, and V. Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police, discussed with the Regional Transport Officers and TNSTC officials, ways to prevent footboard travelling.
A statement said that the crew members of buses should not encourage footboard travelling and should warn all the violators. The details of those who do not heed the advice of the crew should be intimated to the local police station.
It was said that footboard travelling not only puts the said person in danger, but also causes inconvenience to other passengers, especially children and the aged.
The TNSTC officials have been asked to set right the hydraulic doors in the buses.
Awareness programmes on the evils of footboard travelling should be created among the volunteers of National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corps and members of the public. Penal action would be taken against those who violate Motor Vehicle Act, the statement said.
