The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, catering to the needs of the poor patients from the southern districts, has forwarded a proposal to the State Government seeking a hefty allocation of Rs. 160 crore for creating additional facilities, including 1,000 additional beds, in the 48-year-old hospital.
During the review meeting chaired by Minister for Health and Family Welfare K.C. Veeramani a few days ago at TVMCH, the proposal was handed over to the Minister, who asked Special Secretary P. Senthilkumar to assess the plea and to submit a report on an early note on the genuineness of the demand so that the next course of action on this appeal could be taken without further delay.
“We hope that the State Government would make this allocation and add more colours to the TVMCH within near future,” TVMCH sources said. As per the proposal submitted to the Minister, a new block should be created to house 1,000 additional beds and allied facilities including surgical facilities.
“Since healthcare has become a costly commodity in the modern world and the already suffering poor from severe inflation cannot afford to the medical treatment being given in private hospitals, we intend to create more infrastructure at TVMCH so that we can provide better diagnosis and quality treatment without charging anything,” said a senior doctor of TVMCH.
When the minister reviewed the performance of the Department of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, he discussed the need for establishing cath lab, which would require another Rs. 4 crore.
The TVMCH, hence, also submitted a proposal in this regard and stressed the need for creating Acute Stroke Care Unit in the Department of Neurology.
On behalf of the Departments of Nephrology and Urology, it was insisted in the review meeting that renal transplant programme should be started TVMCH as the poor patients suffering from kidney failure had to rely upon the private hospitals.
To improve the sanitary conditions, the TVMCH administration has appealed to the minister appoint adequate number of sanitary workers to keep the entire hospital premises clean and create patient-friendly atmosphere.
