The Corporation has decided to allow small traders to set up shops on the roadside temporarily without affecting vehicular movement.
A resolution to this effect was passed in the corporation council meeting here on Monday.
The resolution said the urban local body had decided to allow small traders to set up their “shops” on the roadside as a means of sustenance for a few hundred poor families. The aspirants should submit their applications to the authorities after obtaining consent from the urban local body.
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors supported the resolution.
A. Balan, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member, wanted to know whether the Corporation would remove the Aavin shops set up recently at 16 places on the roadside across the city.
The Commissioner M. Seeni Ajmal Khan said permission had been granted as the shops were promoting the sale of Aavin products.
These shops had also got permission from the Department of Highways and from a committee headed by the District Collector.
When AIADMK councillor ‘Palai’ Paramasivan wanted to know whether the advertising agencies had obtained permission from the Corporation for erecting hoardings on both sides of Sulochana Mudaliar Bridge across the Tamirabharani river at Kokkirakulam, the Commissioner said that these were erected without permission and steps would be taken to remove them.
Regarding the removal of encroachments on drainage channels, the Mayor Vijila Sathyananth said officials had been asked to inspect the places where illegal constructions had come up and take necessary action immediately.
