Three fresh granite cases registered

For allegedly quarrying on Government poromboke lands in violation of law

The Madurai District police on Monday registered three fresh cases against three granite companies for allegedly quarrying on Government poromboke lands in violation of law.

A retired Tahsildar, Venkatasubbu, who was the power agent for a quarry licensee, K.N.Solairajan, had complained that Sindhu Granite and PRP Granites had illegally quarried granite after encroaching upon their two-hectare land.

He had also complained that officials of TAMIN, Department of Geology and Department of Mines had conspired with the two granite companies in this regard.

Based on the complaint, the Keezhavalavu police booked a case against 10 persons, including P.K.Selvaraj of Sindhu Granite and his son Surya Prakash, and P.R.Palanichamy of PRP Granites and his family members. The second complaint was filed with the Melur police against P.K.Selvaraj and seven others for allegedly quarrying granite on Kallakatti oorani poromboke land and causing a loss of Rs.431 crore to the State exchequer.

The third complaint was filed against Panneer Mohammed and seven others for allegedly quarrying on the same poromboke land. They were accused of causing a loss of Rs.17.59 crore to the exchequer.

The accused were booked under several Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those dealing with cheating and theft.
