A large number of followers, members of various community organisations and political activists visited Kalaiyarkoil near here on the occasion of guru puja of Marudhu brothers.
The people from different walks of life, who thronged the memorial from different parts of the State, particularly from Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Pudukottai paid floral tribute to the brothers.
S. Thangavelan, Minister for Slum Clearance, J.K. Rithish Kumar, Ramanathapuram MP, Manick Tagore, Virudhunagar MP, former Minister S. Thirunavukarasar, president, Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam, Sridhar Vandayar, and president, Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam, N. Sethuraman, were among those visited the memorial.
Though the programme went on well without major incidents, policemen were tested by the frenzied crowd throughout the day.
A State-owned bus, going to R.S. Mangalam from Sivaganga, was stoned by a group near the depot in Sivaganga. Buses were operated in groups with tight security to prevent untoward incidents.
S.S. Krishnamoorthy, Inspector General of Police, South Zone, A. Amalraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ramanathapuram range, and N. Rajasekaran, Superintendent of Police, Sivaganga district, supervised the security arrangements.
Mr. Rajasekaran told The Hindu that there were no untoward incidents in Kalaiyarkoil and other parts of the district.
Though the bandobust for Marudhu brothers would be lifted, policemen would continue to step up vigil in sensitive places.
The statues of community and political leaders in the district would be guarded by policemen.
