Hundreds of people on Friday thronged Pillaiyarpatti near here on the occasion of car festival of Sri Karpaga Vinayagar temple.

This was part of the 10-day Vinayaka Chaturti festival that began on September 2. The decorated car was off to a good start from the base in the evening.

It went along the four car streets of the temple, which was believed to have been constructed about 1,600 years ago.

A large number of devotees, who came from different parts of the State, pulled the car, using a huge rope. While priests chanted mantras and slogans, the devotees raised chorus in praise of Lord Karpaga Vinayaka. The second car, in which Sri Sandikeswaran was seated on the podium, was also pulled by the devotees. Though there was rain during the car festival, it did not dampen the spirit of devotees.

Special abishekams were performed to the presiding deity.
