November 20, 2012 11:37 am | Updated 11:37 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

The police have arrested three teenagers for allegedly assaulting three persons including a 70-year-old woman.

They said P. Lakshmanan (18) of V.M. Chathram was assaulted by a group of teenagers belonging to another community after a minor altercation that broke out between them when they were playing cricket on Sunday evening.

Vehicle damaged

As autorickshaw driver K. Manthiramurthy (26) tried to save Lakshmanan, the teenagers also assaulted him and damaged his vehicle besides assaulting his grandmother P. Sivakami (70), the police also said.

Based on the complaint from Lakshmanan, police arrested a second year polytechnic student, a Plus One student and M. Sudarmani (18), a first year ITI student, all from Immanuel Colony near V.M. Chathram and the hunt is on to nab six others, police said.

The arrested were lodged in the juvenile home near the new bus-stand.

Road roko

Condemning the arrest and demanding the release of the teenagers, a group of people from Immanuel Colony blocked traffic at V.M. Chathram on the Palayamkottai - Tiruchendur Road on Monday for about an hour around 11.30 a.m.

The agitators withdrew their protest after the police assured them that they would take “appropriate action as per law.”
