While 11,000 devotees witnessed the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Tirukkalyanam at the temple here on Thursday, many others from across the country and the world did not miss out on the proceedings.
The ‘Tirukkalyanam’ was shown on 10 LED screens in the Chithirai streets around the temple. Many devotees, who were unable to gain an entry into the temple, were seen gathering around the LED screens. Many women sitting near the screens were seen changing their ‘thali,’ as is the custom during the Tirukkalyanam, when the ‘mangalyadharanam’ for Goddess Meenakshi was performed.
However, a few devotees complained of disruptions in the live relay and said that the telecast was affected for nearly 15 minutes between 9 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. “Even though the telecast was temporarily affected, the screens thankfully started working during the ‘mangalyadharanam’,” L. Meena, a flower vendor in the South Chithirai Street, said.
For devotees all over the world, the event was streamed live on the official website of the temple.
An official from the temple said that the website had registered nearly 2,500 views of the live webcast of the celestial wedding.
“Most of the devotees who saw the event online were from the United States, Malaysia, Singapore, England and the UAE, and Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in India,” he said.
