Even as normal life was affected in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts due to continuous rain on Sunday, reports said several kanmois and small ooranies had been breached.

The heavy flow of water along the course of the Vaigai, consistent rain and poor condition of bunds were said to be the reasons for the breaches. Seelakudi, Kalavangudi, Mayakulam near R.S. Mangalam were among those breached. The water stored in the kanmois had entered the nearby paddy fields, open areas and others, causing inundation. There were reports that a few kanmois in Sivaganga district also breached on Sunday.

Hansraj Verma, Principal Secretary and Commissioner, Labour Welfare Department, visited various flood-hit areas in the district to take stock of the situation.

Mr. Verma, accompanied by T.N. Hariharan, Collector, K. Balasubramanian, District Revenue Officer, P. Ananthraj, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency, inspected the submerged paddy fields, damaged roads, waterlogged houses, streets in Keelapudukudi, Melapudukudi, Nehurupuram, Kumbaram, Karan, Rameswaram and others.

Mr. Verma instructed the officials to survey the flood damages and list out the needed repair works.

Due to the continuous rain, holiday has been announced for schools in Ramanathapuram district on Monday. Collector Hariharan said all officials were instructed to carry out flood relief works.

Sivaganga Collector V. Sampath said PWD and other officials had been asked to take preventive steps to prevent the breach of tanks and kanmois immediately. Headmasters of primary schools were given power to take decision on closing the schools based on local condition.
