A tank that could help to irrigate 725 acres of land in Mallarpuram in the district had been dug across Ayankoil odai, District Collector N. Mathivanan said on Wednesday.

It was suggested to study the possibility of converting the area of the tank, surrounded by hills, into a picnic spot to make the Rs. 749.46 lakh project into a revenue generation spot, Mathivanan said in a release here.

The tank, spread over 15 heactares of land, could hold 21.5 tmcft of water. “So far rain water collected from around 12 sqkm of catchment area in Western Ghats flowed through the stream and was used by farmers having lift irrigation facility”, he said.

The greenery around the tank provided ambiance for a picnic spot and boating facility could be introduced, he said. The bund of the tank had been formed in a 1.025 km area. Two branch canals of 2.4 km and 1.35 km and a distributory canal of 1.3 km had been constructed.
