Having completed the first phase of the cleaning of the banks of Tamirabharani in the city during the recently held first phase of the exercise, Collector Sandeep Nanduri has planned to organise the second phase of the cleaning operation within a couple of weeks.

Addressing a meeting held at the Collectorate in this connection on Saturday, Mr. Sandeep said over 2,000 persons, including 1,500 students from 20 colleges and 500 volunteers, participated in the cleaning the banks between Karuppanthurai and North Bypass Bridge that was taken up in the first phase on July 16 last.

Thanks to the efforts of the students and the volunteers, over 7 tonnes of garbage was collected and removed.

Evaluating the previous cleaning operation, Mr. Sandeep said the next phase of the exercise should be devoid of the mistakes that had crept in inadvertently during the first phase.

“Since the first phase triggered a widespread reception, it has also created more expectation. Hence, it is necessary to execute the second phase in a more planned manner,” Mr. Sandeep said.

The Collector discussed with the participants the steps to be taken to keep the already scavenged stretch clean and asked the Corporation personnel to keep garbage bins near the river bank.

Mr. Sandeep appealed to the public and commercial establishments to join hands with the district administration in cleaning the river.

District Revenue Officer P. Muthuramalingam, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency A. Palani, Dean, Anna University – Tirunelveli Regional Office, Sakthinathan and NSS Project Officers of 21 colleges participated in the meeting.
