Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa issued an ultimatum to engineers of the Madurai Corporation asking them to take stock of the illegal underground drainage (UGD) connections in the city within the next 10 days.

“There are many reports of illegal connections in various wards which have come to our notice. Details regarding illegal drainage connections for every ward should be prepared and necessary action should be initiated,” he said, while addressing the engineers at a review meeting of the engineering department of the Madurai Corporation.

Mr. Chellappa further said that action would be initiated against the engineers in-charge of the wards if illegal connections were found during inspections carried out by the corporation commissioner and other officials.

During the meeting, the Mayor and Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan studied the infrastructural works in progress in the corporation limits and asked the officials to expedite them. The proposals which have been submitted and the estimates to be prepared were also reviewed.

Mr. Rajan Chellappa further said that in case of delay in completing the works by contractors, fines should be levied on them.

“In the case of a prolonged delay, the contract should be cancelled and the contractors should be blacklisted as delay in completing the works results in loss for the corporation and also causes hardship for the public,” the Mayor said.

The engineers were also asked to work in cooperation with the Councillors and asked to review petitions submitted by them to carry out work based on it at the earliest in their wards.
