The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday ordered Madurai Kamaraj University to maintain status quo with respect to appointment of N. Rajasekar as its Registrar and others as Associate Professors and Assistant Professors.
Passing interim orders on a writ petition filed by seven syndicate members, Justice K.K. Sasidharan said the new appointments would be subject to the result of a writ petition in which the varsity had been accused of making the appointments without the approval of the Syndicate.
The judge also directed advocate S. Srinivasa Raghavan to take notice on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and adjourned the hearing to next month for filing a counter affidavit. The writ petitioners are M. Rajarajan, R. Kannan, V. Venkatraman, K. Selvakumar, Murali Pakshirajan, K. Pitchumani and P. Periakaruppan.
According to them, the agenda and an additional agenda circulated to the members of the syndicate with respect to a meeting convened on May 29 contained only 32 items, of which none was related to the appointment of Registrar, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors.
However, on June 16, the petitioners were shocked to find that the approved minutes of the meeting contained item number 33 pertaining to the appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff and item number 34 relating to the appointment of a full-time Registrar.
