A syndicate meeting of the Madurai Kamaraj University scheduled for June 30 has been postponed. It assumes significance in the wake of the verdict of the Madras High Court Bench here on June 26, setting aside the appointment of Vice- Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan.
The court had set aside her appointment on the ground that she had served only as an Associate Professor and not as a Professor as required under UGC regulations.
N. Rajasekar, Registrar of MKU, told The Hindu on Saturday that the syndicate meeting had been postponed since a few agenda items were yet to be finalised.
“The postponement of syndicate meeting has nothing to do with the High Court verdict. We have not decided on alternative date as of now. It will be decided later,” he said.
However, according to sources, as many as 30 items were listed in the agenda for the proposed syndicate meeting. Among them were several prominent items.
One of the items was consideration of the report submitted by Justice A. Raman following an inquiry into allegations on appointment of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors in 2010 and 2011.
The retired judge was appointed as a one-man commission by the Syndicate in its meeting on August 21, 2012, to look into as many as 120 appointments made in the two years during former Vice Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel’s tenure.
Yet another item in the agenda was to consider the report of an expert committee on the validity of S. Krishnasamy as a research guide for Ph.D and M.Phil scholars in Bio-Technology.
The expert committee included Sangeeta Shukla, VC of Jiwaji University, Gwalior, S. Jeyachandran, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Pondicherry University, and M. Rajiakodi, Dean, MKU.
Other items included revision of printing rates for approved printing presses in the Directorate of Distance Education, to consider reconstitution of Internal Quality Assurance Cell and to consider report of reimbursement of allowances and construction amount to constituent colleges to the tune of over Rs. 31.66 crore.
