The Leucoderma Awareness Movement – India’s Tamil Nadu Chapter has proposed to conduct a ‘swayamvara’ in Tiruchi on January 27 exclusively for the unmarried youth afflicted by ‘vitiligo,’ a skin disorder characterised by patches of unpigmented skin. “The event, first of its kind in South India, will be organised at National College between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on January 27,” K. Umapathi, secretary, Leucoderma Awareness Movement, told reporters here on Saturday.
Though this disorder was not a disease, not contagious, not hereditary and had no medical significance, only social stigma had caused social isolation of the persons affected by ‘vitiligo.’ Consequently, marriage had become a mirage for these people. “To bring about a cheerful change in the lives of the youth afflicted by this skin disorder, we’re organising this programme in Tiruchi,” said Mr. Umapathi.
After selecting their better-half in the ‘swayamvara,’ families of the bride and the groom can discuss all other related points later before finalising the marriage, he said.
