May 14, 2010 03:05 pm | Updated 03:05 pm IST - MADURAI:

The private consultant appointed by the State Government has completed the survey of all roads and by-lanes in the city that have been proposed to be upgraded to international standards, Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine said.

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, he said that Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Development Fund would implement the road works.

A meeting of officials from all the departments using the road such as telecom service providers, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, traffic police and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board was held to ascertain their development plans for the next 20 years.

Separate ducts would be provided for electricity and telephone cables on both sides of the road. The road, after re-laying, would not be cut or dug to lay cables and repair water pipelines for five years. The contractor would maintain the road.

All types of roads, including by-lanes, State and National Highways running through the city, would be upgraded.

The estimate for the work would be prepared in two months and works was likely to begin by the end of the year.
