Equipment used in the 14- month survey for alternative alignment for the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) has been brought ashore as the work is almost over, officials said.
The task would now focus on compilation of data and the final report would be submitted to higher officials of the shipping ministry, they said.
Work on the project has been stalled as the Supreme Court had earlier reserved orders on the project and appointed an expert Committee headed by noted environmentalist R K Pachauri. The court was moved on the grounds that the present alignment would damage the ‘Ramar sethu,’ a bridge believed to have been constructed by Lord Ram.
The State government had claimed that some portion of SSCP in its original alignment had been completed at enormous cost.
The case relating to SSCP is pending in the Apex Court.
SSCP proposes linking Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka.
