Two temporary girders were inserted under the Madurai-Virudhunagar railway line at level crossing in Palanganatham on Sunday.

With this, the construction wing of railway has begun the ground work for providing a limited user subway in lieu of the level crossing.

A railway official said that the railway portion of the work to construct the subway would be completed in 90 days.

The remaining work of constructing approach road for 90 metres on either side could begin only after the Corporation handed over the land to the railway.

7.5-metre width

The railway has proposed to construct the subway with 7.5-metre width to cater to two-way traffic between Tirupparankundram highway and Jaihindpuram.

“Any vehicle with a height of up to 3 metres could make use of the facility,” the official said. The total cost of the project for the railway, including completion of its portion of work for a road over bridge, is Rs. 5.5 crore.

“The work for ROB will begin within three months,” the official said. State Highways will carry out the remaining work of the ROB, he added.
