State seeks time in Navodaya Vidyalaya case

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya to submit a written statement of the oral submissions made by it earlier.

A submission was made on behalf of Navodaya Vidyalaya that the medium of instruction was Tamil and Hindi was not being imposed in any manner.

V. Venkateshwaran, Puducherry Navodaya Vidyalaya Principal, said in his submission that Navodaya Vidyalaya encourages mother tongue. He added that in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil is taught as one of the languages for which a Tamil tutor was appointed and students from Karaikal go on an exchange programmes to Rewa.

The petition was filed by Kumari Mahasabha for establishing Navodaya Vidyalaya in Tamil Nadu as the curriculum would help rural students of the State. Tamil Nadu is the only State in the country where a Navodaya Vidyalaya is yet to be established.

The State government sought time to respond to the submission made by Navodya Vidyalaya. The petition has been posted for further hearing on September 11.
