Transgenders should study law and equip themselves with legal acumen, said Jecintha Martin, Sub-Judge, Madurai District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA).

At an awareness programme held here on Wednesday, she urged the transgenders to pursue higher education, and said only knowledge would help uplift them. She promised to help those who were interested in pursuing a law degree.

Bharathi Kannamma, a transgender activist, said the government should revoke Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code “as it violated the fundamental right of life and liberty and the right to equality guaranteed under the Constitution.” Nearly 20 transgenders took part in the session.
