Speakers at the national Voters’ Day (January 25) celebration appealed to all the first time voters to cast their votes without fail.
“Exercising your vote is your right…Do not fail from the democratic responsibility. Kindly cast it,” was the message conveyed to students who had attained 18 years of age as on January 1, 2014.
For the first time, when you visit a polling station as a registered voter, cast your votes to the right candidate.
By not turning up on the date of polling, you fail from your duty to the nation.
Youngsters played a key role in the nation-building and they had the responsibility in determining a strong nation in all spheres.
To achieve this goal, youngsters should cast their votes to the right candidate. In a democracy, the responsibilities of the citizens were as important as that of the candidates contesting the elections.
A careful understanding of the contestants was essential, the speakers underlined.
As appealed by the Election Commission of India, taking money or any other goods in cash or kind for votes was an offence and punishable, the speakers pointed out.
Collector L. Subramanian, Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur, Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan, Corporation Commissioner Kiran Ghurrala and others participated in the celebrations.
They presented voter ID cards to the first time voters.
Many students who received the cards were upbeat and promised to cast their votes to the right candidates.
They also took a pledge not to sell their votes under any circumstances.
The district administration and Corporation of Madurai organised rallies and competitions to mark the day in which college students took part.
“Poikal kuthirai” artistes staged skits appealing to the public to cast their votes without fail.
