The 24 Corporation schools in Madurai fared well and recorded an overall pass percentage of 94.48 in the SSLC exams, which was marginally higher than the 93.48 pass percentage recorded in 2013.
Six schools – Kasturba Gandhi Matric Higher Secondary School, Bharathiyar Boys Corporation School, Manimegalai Corporation Girls HSS, Corporation High School, Munichalai, N.M.S.M. Corporation HS and Thiruvalluvar Corporation HS – secured cent percent pass.
Of the 2,283 students from the Corporation schools who wrote the SSLC exam, 2,157 secured a pass. S. Krishnaveni from Thiru.Vi.Ka HSS and P. Anusuya from Kakkai Padiniyaar Girls HSS secured 494 marks each and emerged as the toppers among the Corporation school students.
M. Anusuya from Ponmudiyar Girls HSS stood second with 491 marks, and S. Anitha from the same school, and S. Sumitha Kalyani from Kasturba Gandhi Matric HSS came third with a score of 490 marks.
175 score centumAs many as 175 students scored centum in Maths, Science and Social Science.
Thirty-one students from Masathiyar Girls HSS scored full marks in Science. School headmistress R. Kannammal said the dedication of the Science teacher and the hard work of the students paid off.
“We administered a number of tests with a variety of questions to instil confidence in the students,” said Science teacher M. Gnanaprakasam. “Encouragement and motivation from the teachers play a key role in ensuring good results,” he added.
The Corporation school toppers were felicitated by Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa, Deputy Mayor K. Thiraviam and Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan. The headmasters and headmistresses of the Corporation schools which had registered 100 per cent pass were also honoured.
Mr. Chellappa said the government was taking all measures to ensure good education in Corporation schools. The various schemes of the State government had benefited the students, he added.
Humble backgroundMany of the Corporation school students who scored well come from humble backgrounds.
For P. Anusuya from Kakkai Padiniyaar Girls HSS who secured the first place among the Corporation school students, it was constant focus and hard work that helped her achieve. She scored centum in Maths, Science and Social science.
Having lost her parents at a young age, Anusuya was brought up by her grandparents who were labourers. “They stopped working a few years back but made sure that she continued her studies. They are surviving on a meagre pension of Rs.2,000 per month,” said Divya Bharathi, her sister.
Teachers from her school said they always believed she would be a rank holder. “She was very determined to do well. There have been constant financial problems but she managed to focus and do well,” a relative of hers said.
Stating that she chose Biology and Mathematics group for Class XI, Anusuya said she wanted to become a doctor.
