Commissioner orders a series of welfare measures for them

“I will give you a pleasant surprise if you score high marks and secure State ranks. You tell me what you want and everything will be provided to make you comfortable to study well.” These were the encouraging words from Corporation Commissioner C. Kathiravan during an informal chat with five top scoring students of Kaakkaipadiniyar Girls’ Higher Secondary School at Chokkikulam in the city on Tuesday.

Mr Kathiravan took spot decisions which would go a long way in enthusing students in 65 schools run by the Madurai Corporation.

“From the coming academic year, our students should have spoken English classes from Sixth Standard. Get the resource persons soon and start the work in February itself,” he told Corporation Education Officer M. Rajendran. His next decision was to supply iron tablets to students, especially girls, who are anaemic. “Attach the corporation schools to the nearest health centre. Mere identification of anaemic students is not enough. We have to provide them with supplementary nutrition too,” Commissioner instructed City Health Officer V. Shanmugasundaram. “We can organise vehicles to take them to swimming pool in batches,” he said.

He got an assurance from a philanthropist that 200 kg of green gram ‘sundal’ would be supplied to Tenth and Plus Two students of corporation schools attending special classes in the evenings. “How are your school toilets and do you have water,” he asked them. When they replied that there was problem on some days, he instructed the Headmistress to get a new bore well and pipeline quickly.
