Student toppers felicitated

Mayor (in-charge), K. Thiraviyam, hoisted the national flag at Corporation headoffice, Anna Malaigai, in the presence of Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri, on the occasion of 70 Independence Day on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor said that road improvement works at a cost of Rs. 25 crore, underground drainage works for Rs. 7 crore and drinking water supply works for Rs. 4 crore were underway from the surplus toll funds of Ring Road.

Construction of new toilets and repairing old ones had been taken up at a cost of Rs. 6.06 crore to prevent open defecation, he added. New toilets would be constructed at 30 places at a cost of Rs. 90 lakh, he said.

A modern fruits market at a cost of Rs. 15 crore is being constructed at Mattuthavani to shift those fruit shops located in heart of the city.

The Mayor and the Commissioner gave away prizes to student toppers of 10 and 12 public examination and to the teachers. Cash awards were given to the winners among the students who participated in painting of pictures on walls on Race Course Road.

Students of various Corporation schools presented cultural programmes.

Deputy Commissioner S. Shanthi, Zonal chairpersons P. Salaimuthu, Shanmugavalli, Chairperson of Standing Committee on Education A. Suganthi, City Engineer A. Madhuram, were present.
