Student drowns in Corporation swimming pool

August 30, 2014 09:59 am | Updated 09:59 am IST - MADURAI:

A youth drowned in the Corporation swimming pool here on Friday morning.

According to police, since it was college vacation, a group of four students, including the deceased, M. Sundaramohan (20) of K. Pudur, had gone to the pool near Gandhi Memorial Museum around 7 a.m.

While Sundaramohan was swimming at the deep end of the pool — he had told his friends that he knew swimming — the others were learning to swim at the shallow end. After the first shift, the whistle was blown and his friends stepped out of the pool. They looked for Sundaramohan and found him lying under water on the floor of the pool.

The incident took place despite the presence of trainers and other staff who did not notice the boy lying under the water, an eyewitness said.

Immediately, the doctor available at the swimming pool gave first-aid to the youth, and he was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he died. Later, the body was taken to Government Rajaji Hospital for post-mortem.

Sundaramohan’s friends said he had been attending swimming classes at a hotel in the city for the past two months.

This is the first death reported after the Corporation pool underwent a revamp last month. Tallakulam police have registered a case of suspicious death and are investigating.
