Villagers of Pazhaiyur in Peraiyur panchayat were asked to implement rainwater harvesting facility in their houses by Collector L. Subramanian at the gram sabha meeting on Sunday.

A press release said Mr. Subramanian told the villagers to clear places where water stagnated to prevent breeding of mosquitoes and instructed them keep their surroundings clean to prevent outbreak of diseases.

Speaking about the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan campaign which offers subsidies to build toilets for households, the Collector urged the people to make use of the subsidies given by the government and construct toilets which would help end open defecation.

Toll-free number

In case of emergencies, the people were urged to make use of the District Administration’s toll-free number ‘1077.’

The villagers were also asked to cover open borewells in their area, reduce the use of plastics and ensure that solar-powered streetlights installed in the village were maintained and used properly. Awareness programmes against use of tobacco as well as the welfare schemes offered such as Magalir Thittam and Pudhu Vazhvu Thittam were conducted.
